Picking Window Treatment Colors

Deciding on the colors you want can be the most challenging part of selecting window treatments. Do you want to match the window frame, wall, floor or couch? Or would you rather go with a bold contrast? To some degree, it depends on your risk tolerance.

Here are some tips for honing in on the right colors for your new or redecorating project:

Be Safe: Go with the Color of the Window Trims

A safe choice is to match your blinds or shades to the window trim or molding hue. Most trim is in the white family, so this is a neutral look sure to complement your décor. Bring home paint samples; there are hundreds of “whites and creams.”

Take a Small Risk: Coordinate with the Wall, Floor or Furniture

Tone-on-tone is in style. You can also go a few shades lighter than the wall for a coordinated look that doesn’t feel heavy. If you know the name of the paint color, Adler’s Blinds in Madeira can match it.

Matching to wood furniture or finishes is a great way to bring the natural look to your windows. Wood and faux wood blinds, woven wood shades and wood shutters come in a range of colors and stains to complement any décor.

If you are using fabric for your window treatments, you can also choose fabrics that pick up room accessories like rugs, pillows or an accent chair.

Be Bold: Add Contrast

In a neutral room, a bold color makes a big statement and pulls the room together.

High contrast works just as well with black and brown. A blind in a dark stain in an otherwise light room will pop.

Let the Room Size Choose

Lighter colors on small-room windows can make a space feel cheerier, larger and more open. Dark colors on little windows can make the room feel smaller.

For bigger areas or rooms with many windows, a darker color adds depth and coziness. If you have a sliding door, consider what the room will look like when the window coverings are closed.
