Home Trends 2022: Comfortable, Cozy, Convenient

living room with large picture windows and natural light

The added time we are spending in our home/home office/home classroom thanks to COVID has home decorators rethinking everything.

Several of This Year’s Trends are Focused on Function

Family-friendly comfort

We are living indoors more than ever: eating at home more, recreating inside more. Additional wear and tear are drawing consumers to more durable materials and furnishings. Fabrics that can handle spills are gaining traction.

This trend includes window dressings. When making selections, think durable and easy to maintain. Composite shutters and roller shades are two good options:

  • Composite shutters resist moisture, are easy to clean, and have a polypropylene finish that won’t crack, chip or warp.
  • Roller shades can be rolled up a little or a lot to provide more light and/or keep an eye on goings-on outdoors. They come cordless or motorized. Because they hang vertically, they gather less dust than blinds.
Layers for bed and window treatments

Cotton sheets, lightweight blankets and cozy quilts give your bed layers that are easy to adjust for your comfort.

Automated window shades you can close with a phone app, a remote or even a command to Alexa add a layer of convenience to life. Custom window treatments can block heat, light and sound, lending a peaceful ambiance to any room.

Private space for each inhabitant

Pandemic togetherness has caused families to rethink open floor plans. Kitchens are being divided into meal preparing, working, eating and studying spaces. Spare bedrooms are being reconfigured as home offices or remote learning spaces.

Other 2022 Trends Recreate the Calm of Being in Nature

Earth-tone neutrals

Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year is Evergreen Fog—an earthly gray-green. One of their most popular colors is Accessible Beige. Grays are getting warmer and being combined with less-bright whites and accent colors.

These colors create a soothing palette that blends well with lighter wood tones and black frame accents.

Greens are still popular—from moody dark hues to light sage greens. They bring the outdoors in, and make any space feel relaxing.

Lighter-toned woods

Woods have getting lighter for years. Why? They feel more natural, warm up a room and are easier to clean. Lighter-colored floors, for example, don’t show footprints well as darker ones. And lighter wood tones pair well with on-trend natural paint colors.

Natural textures

A few of the natural elements being utilized in home furnishings include:

  • Rattan and wicker
  • Dried flowers
  • Bamboo, reeds and jute
